So... What's this all about?

Image
You might ask us who we are. Well, we are going to tell you.   We are Dizzy and Cupcake. I’m Dizzy and I have made Dizzy a crazy ‘dizzy’ clown who loves to spin with her pinwheels. And I’m Cupcake and I have made Cupcake a ‘sweet’ clown who loves to play with her bunny frosting. We, Dizzy and Cupcake, are the two clowns that make up Something Silly. Something Silly Clowns is our small Christian clown troop where our main mission is to spread God’s love. We mainly minister to kids ages 2-7 and the elderly. About six months ago we were looking for a name for our troupe and we ran across this, incredible poem by Shel Silverstein called “Put something in.” "Draw a crazy picture, Write a nutty poem, Sing a mumble-grumble song, Whistle through your comb. Do a loony-goony dance 'Cross the kitchen floor, Put something silly in the world That ain't been there before. At that point we became Something Silly, where we were going to “put somethi...

How to Tweak Scripts

Image
In a post a few months ago we talked about some of the places that we get ideas for skits and performances. One of the place that we mentioned is online freebies. In that blog post we gave you many of the sites that we have found scripts from, and that we have used to get ideas from. Today we are going to tell you how we rewrite online freebies. If you are just starting out as a clown you may want to stick to finding pre written scripts to use in performances for awhile. When you have found your character and the characters of those who you are performing with, it is easier to start by rewriting scripts and then begin to write your own material. When we first started all of our material was either already written for us or we improvised, so that we could reach our end result. We did not find this to be the best way for us to prepare for performances so when we still had a leader over us but we were beginning to take on a large portion of the work for ourselve...

A Theme for Your Performance; Why and how?

Image
You may think “Why should I bother to choose a theme for my performance”, and we have come up with 3 main reasons why. First, what is a theme or topic? A theme or topic for a performance is one idea or event that the whole performance is based around. Examples of this are the Christmas or Easter story and peace or love. The first reason to choose a theme is to make it easier for you. As the creator, it is easier to either find or create material for one topic rather than 3 or 4. It is also easier to explain the same theme from many different angles than to do more than one topic at the same time. The next reason is so that the audience can follow and understand. When you keep the topic the same throughout the performance it makes it easy for them to follow. A lot of research has shown that, especially in young kids, they need to hear things 3 to 4 times before they can understand, so when ministering to them you can help them learn more if you say things multiple times...

Questions for storm

Image
Hey everyone. We have an exciting announcement to make. We have a new member of Something Silly Clowns. We are still working on finding the place for her to fill in our strange little God-loving group, but we would like you to get to know her yourself. Q: What is your name? A: Storm Costume Questions Q: What is your costume? A: My costume is a pair of overalls with cloud patches, a white t-shirt, a cream cardigan, dark blue shoes, and a large gray hat. Character Questions Q: Where do you live? A: I live in a cloud. That’s the reason for all the clouds on my outfit, that’s my house. It shrinks and grows a bit so I just piece it back together. I usually have my house above Dizzy’s windmill I’m able to get a nice breeze from the windmill but not to much so that my house flies away.   Q: Who is your character? A: If I were explain my character in a few word they would be sad, down, and a realist. Q: What do you do with Cupcake and Dizz...

Photoshoots 101!

Image
Photoshoots 101! As most of you probably already know, if you read our 2-year update, that we were unable to finish this photo shoot due to a small accident (no one was injured, at least not any worse than large scrapes and bruises). Nevertheless, all of these concepts still apply there are just fewer photos to show you, but we still had fun. A little under two years ago we did a clowny photoshoot, last year we did another photoshoot but we wanted to bring you along with us so you know both why we do photoshoots and some more specifics on the how. If you have not already, you can watch the parts of our day that we vlogged. Where? As we said in our last post about photoshoots you can do a photo shoot almost anywhere. We like to choose parks that are within 30 min of our house that have a variety of backdrops that we can use. Some things that we like are playgrounds, trees, fields, train tracks, water fetcher. The list could go on and on. For this photoshoot...
