You Know Your a Clown When...

Hi everyone! We hope you have been enjoying our blog so far! Today we thought that we would take
a break from our “How to be a clown” and “Skits and performances” series to bring you a post that is
mainly fun! Sometimes when you’re a clown and have been for a little while, you do some strange
things and don’t even really think about how weird they are anymore, some of these things may
even seem almost crazy when you are just learning but become normal fast. So here we have for
you some of those moments which whether you think about them anymore or not... pretty much
guarantee that you are a clown.

You know your a clown when…
  • You go into the bathroom and 45 minutes later you return as someone else.
    • We as clowns go into the bathroom as ourselves and return as our clown personas.
  • You have so much character paraphernalia that there is no longer any room for you.
    • We both get each other character paraphernalia for each others birthdays. It seems to be everywhere. You also feel that you might have everything until you find something else you need.
  • You are worried about your face melting halfway through the day.
    • If you sweat or it starts to rain we sometimes worry about our makeup running. We have formally renamed this as “your face melting off.”
  • You know that sometimes having pancake on your face is a good thing.
    • Or maybe that’s pancake makeup...
  • You tell kids that you have a duffle bag to go to someone's house but really it's your costume.
    • If you read our “What’s in Our Clown Bags?” post, you know that we like to bring our clown stuff in a duffel bag with a pillow to tell the kids we are going to someone's house, but it’s just our costume.
  • You start laughing somewhere strange when you thought of the perfect joke.
    • We often think of the perfect joke for a skit when we are somewhere strange like in the middle of Church service, and it will make us laugh.
  • Someone tells you that they would like to be a clown and you know that they don’t understand clowning.
    • When you become a clown you find out how much work you have to do. Many people tell us before they start they are interested but we know that they don't know how much work it is.
  • You really NEED a straw.
    • If you drink without a straw you run the major risk of smudging or wrecking any makeup you have on your lips.
  • You are hungry but can’t eat.
    • One unwritten rule of clowning is that you can’t eat. Food crumbs can and will stick to any and all makeup around your mouth.
  • You laugh at the same joke EVERY time.
    • If you are in practice or just reading your script you laugh at a joke even if you have heard it 10 times. Some of our favorites were lazer eyes, Rock somebody's world, and Unless you hit him really hard.
  • You are biting your tongue or cheek to keep from laughing.
    • This is related to laughing at the same jokes 100 times, often you aren’t allowed to laugh at your own jokes no matter how much you want to, so you have to do something to stop yourself.
  • You don’t understand why no one laughed at your best joke.
    • This is when the jokes that you have been laughing at all through practices get no laughs during the performance. It is a confusing and terrible feeling.
  • You just can’t wait to do it all again…. After a nap or three.
    • Clowning is so much fun and so rewarding but afterwards you are just completely spent and need a few naps before you do it all over again.
  • You KNOW that a smile can help a whole day to go better.
    • Even when you are sitting in the car as you drive down or if you have to stop at a store on the way to your performance and your all decked out in your costume you will often catch someone's eye and you will see the BIGGEST smile spread over their faces, and you did that!
  • You often have blue or other colored eyebrows
    • When your a clown you put on makeup to make you look different, often this includes eyebrows, this makeup often does not want to come off. So we have gone places afterwards with blue eyebrows.
  • You find your props spilling over ALL over the place.
    • When you have a lot of props to bring to a performance they start to fill up all of your space.
  • You have to relearn how to laugh and sing.
    • Your clown voice often sounds nothing like your normal voice so you have to find out how to sing and laugh in that voice.
  • Someone tells you who you are, (or who they think you are.)
    • When your a clown you start to get really good at the “I don’t know who your talking about” game. The game where you tell kids that your not so-and-so your Dizzy or Cupcake.
  • Someone tells you about yourself.
    • People will often talk to you about yourself and this eventually leads to you talking about yourself in the 3rd person.
  • You pass on information from yourself.
    • For instance often shortly after a performance you will have the kids asking you when your clown is coming back so you say “Well they told me they would be back in September.”
  • You spend hours finding or making something that is “you”.
    • Sometimes it’s hard to find exactly what you want so that it fits your character so you will end up spending AGES searching and making things so that there “just right.”
  • You feel like you have a secret identity, (because you do!)
    • Sometimes when you’re trying so hard to keep up with the so important task of differentiating yourself from your clown with others it almost feels like your undercover on a great mission.
  • You say things understanding that no “normal person” will understand because you have to understand what’s almost beyond understanding to understand. Understand?
    • Okay we know this one was a mouthful but stick with us for a moment, often when your talking about clowning you will say things like this sometimes in a bit of code if kids are around or using terms that only you and your fellow clowns know about so that no one else can understand them.
  • You are reading and understanding this blog.
    • If you can relate to any or all of these things than we can tell you that you are a clown.
  • You know you are Dizzy when you often talk about being blown away.
  • You know you are Cupcake when you often talk about spraying frosting all over the house.
  • You know you are a Christian clown when you are doing research and suddenly understand a well known verse or passage takes on a new or deeper meaning.
    • The Ohh, I understand now

We hope that you had fun reading this post.
