Ideas for when you get stuck- writing scripts

If you think that we pull all of our ideas out of our own imagination, that’s not quiet true. We
do pull some of our ideas out of our heads but we also have some tricks up our sleeves.
When we started writing our own material we never knew where to get ideas for writing our
own scripts so we wanted to help you out by giving you some of the resources and tips we
use when writing our own script.

One of the first and most common things that we do when we get stuck, or need to just
come up with more ideas is to go online and use or rewrite an online freebie. They are free,
you don’t have to pay for them, and they often have great ideas. You either take these skits
and use them as they are or tweak them slightly (just to make sure that they properly fit your
characters), or you can completely rewrite them so that they have the right number of parts
and work well with your audience. You often have to look though many skits but when you
are all out of ideas it can help. One skit that we rewrote from an online freebie was the “How
can we measure God's love?” Skit. https://youtu.be/aarv4Lep5KE?t=12m40s This was an
Easter skit about God’s love and we changed it so that it would work for us. Here are some
of the sites that we go to for ideas.

The next tip may seem obvious if you are a Christian clown, but it is to look up verses and
Bible stories that might relate to your theme. You can do this one of two ways, you can
search a Bible app or website (Like https://www.blueletterbible.org/) for a specific keyword,
or just you can just google Bible stories about _____. Then when you have a Bible story you
can look up a simple version of the story, or if it is popular you can look it up in a children's
story Bible. You can turn the story into its own skit, or you can use the ideas to teach a side,
or aspect of your theme. We write many of our skits in this way, and often this is how we find
the verse that we start and end our performances with. One of the stories that we did like
this was The Christmas Story, in our Christmas performance. https://youtu.be/nIr3Td_Qtug?t=8m51s

The third place that we get ideas from is free Sunday school materials. The main thing that
we do when we are clowning is teach a Sunday school like lesson, but much more fully
planned out, so why couldn’t you use the same ideas. We have a small collection of Sunday
school materials that people have gotten rid of over the years that we can pull from. Often
after the season the material was to be used for Churches will give it away for FREE. The
other way to get material is though websites. Both of the websites below have free sunday
school materials. Children's Ministry Deals often has sales where items are free, and we
now have a folder of materials that has been free. We have stocked up in case we need it in
the future.

Then we have also used educator books and kids devotions. We find that books on tips/
games for teachers often help us with time fillers or interactions with the kids. These always
have to be adapted because they are rarely Christian but they can usually be tied to
Christian principle without too much trouble. With devotion's they have already brought it
down to a child's level so you just have to adapt it. We used a sorting idea from a teacher's
material for the God does not sort hearts interaction with the kid in our love performance.

Our last tip is, when you get stuck and need ideas feel free to ask others. You are not the
only person teaching kids, or others for that matter, and others have tried things and know
what work. We have found that asking parents, pastors, and teacher can be a great place to
start. We were trying to figure out ways to teach kids patience, so we asked those around us
and they helped us come up with the idea to do the 5 more minutes skit. https://youtu.be/XxpaZT6NzM4?t=26m19s

The main thing we want you to take from this is that not everyone can come up with all
perfect ideas on their own all of the time. It is OK to use others ideas, and sometimes (so
long as it is not trademarked, and therefore usable) even material.
